This delightful colour linocut ex libris is by the renowned Czech graphic designer and bookplate artist Jana Krejčová. Signed and dated 1987 by the artist in pencil just below the design, the reverse carries the studio stamp and the technique identification code (X3) for linocut prints.
Born in Bruntál in Nordmähren in 1946, Ms Krejčová is a prolific print-maker having created over 2500 prints, predominantly in linocut. Many of her works are inspired by the architectural forms of the town Olomouc, where she lives and works, as well as traditional Czech folk art.
This particular design, on the other hand, incorporates the artist’s initials J K into the starry sky and is a rather mysterious – possibly mystical – image: is that an angel with spread wings? Whatever the meaning, it’s a gorgeous piece of miniature art.
